Category:
  Language Arts
Grade Level:  Kindergarten
Objective:

Language Arts TEKS K.6C  Reading/Phonological awareness.
Produce rhyming words and distinguish rhyming words from non-rhyming words.

Music TEKS K.1A  Perception.
Identify the difference between the singing and speaking voice.

Behavioral Objectives:

Language Arts -  The students will produce words about their favorite sport and will learn how to distinguish the rhyming words of their favorite sport from other sports.

Music -  The student will be able to identify the different sounds that are used (clapping vs. snapping) as well as (saying their sport vs. singing their sport).

Materials:
Markers and white erase board.

Activities:
Introduce lesson about my favorite sport and whether it is my favorite sport because I enjoy watching it, playing it, or someone I know plays it.  Then I will ask the children what their favorite sport is, and what are things that make their sport different from someone else’s favorite sport.  Using the white board, I will write down all of the children’s answers.  For example:  (1) Basketball, (2)  Tackle, (3) Bat.

Process:

  •  Say the words as a class.

  •  Divide the class into three sections.  Assign a different word to each group.

  •  Say the words in the three groups starting with the one syllable word.  Layer all three words.

  •  Add body percussion.

  •  Drop words, body percussion alone.

High

Basketball

Clap
Middle Tackle

Pat Lap

Low  Bat Stomp

Evaluation:
I will observe whether each child was able to produce their favorite sport and their ability to distinguish the different rhyming words.  I will recognize if the child can identify their sport whether it is sung or spoken, will observe if the child can tell the difference of faster and slower (tempo) and whether they are clapping or snapping.
